Pitchers head out for a fun run
This afternoon, Dave Robertson and Andy Pettitte were running the concourse of Citi Field. The concourse.
“It’s fun, something different,” Robertson said. “We kind of got lost a couple of times.”
Tomko and A.J. are the ringleaders among concourse runners. Joba also has joined. Tomko has been running concourses since 1999 when Reds teammate Juan Guzman got him hooked. Some Yankees began to join him during last weekend’s Florida series. Hey, it beats running circles around the field.
“It can be like Groundhog Day during a season,” Tomko said. “This breaks up the workouts; it goes quicker.”
They run in packs of four sometimes. In a 20-minute run, each guy takes the lead for five minutes. He might break up the run with sit-ups or jumping jacks.
“Right in the middle of the concourse,” Tomko said.
“It’s a lot more fun than running,” Joba said. “I mean, it is running, but you can do a lot more things.”
Joba enjoyed checking out Citi Field, which he describes as “nice, very nice.” Said Tomko: “Extremely nice. It has a lot of character.”
As for Robertson and Pettitte, they made it back to the clubhouse after an unplanned detour.
“We were up by the Caesar’s Club (on the fifth of six floors), then almost ran into the press box,” Robertson said. “We weren’t sure where we were, but we figured we should get out of there.”
Nick Swisher: As we were talking to Robertson, Swisher couldn’t help but interject. “Are you asking him why he threw McCann two backdoor cutters?” asked Swisher, wearing a Cheshire Cat grin. “That’s what I want to know.” (Brian McCann of the Braves hit two home runs against Robertson.) Robertson laughed: “Well, the first one was supposed to be a fastball in – and wasn’t. And the second one was supposed to be a fastball away – and wasn’t.” Swisher was highly amused. Robertson’s a good sport. “He hit two bombs off me,” Robertson said. “But I had a pretty good string going of not giving up home runs.” In 16.1 innings, those are the only two jacks Robertson has given up.
Derek Jeter: He’s got to be really sick to miss back-to-back games with the cough/illness that’s going around the clubhouse.
“George!” That’s how Keith Hernandez greets Cone whenever he comes into the YES booth during the Subway Series. We asked Cone why. When Cone was traded by the Royals to the Mets, he often talked about George Brett. So much so, that Hernandez decided to call him George. And probably a few other things. Honestly, as we told Cone, it’s a much more innocent story than we’d anticipated.
Subway Series: Enjoy tomorrow night’s game, the final interleague contest of the regular season. We’ll be watching.

When will those Red Sox lose a game?
Yankees need to remember how much more fun there is in winning and then disdain losing so much that they minimize it for the rest of the season. CC and AJ back to back gems. Wang your up for tomorrow and we know you’ll do just fine! Okay my fingers are crossed…but it’s still a well wish. Go Yankees.
Do they run before fans are allowed in? That would be awesome to go running with them haha
Kim, you get two days off with the ESPN game and the scheduled off day, enjoy them. Do you think MLB should institute something where the players have a set day off each week like Mondays for example? I thought they have something like that in one of the Japan leagues. I believe the Yankees have 17 officially scheduled days off. A change like that would allow for 26 or 27 days off spread out over a six month season. To make up for those 10 or so games they just need to start the season a few days early like in the end of March.
Tuesday is the Seattle series. Can we expect a Tino Martinez interview since he was both a Mariner and a Yankee? I sure hope he’s around. Looking forward to the Hughes Innerview too. Can you ask him or someone else what the bullpen pitchers do during a game to kill time when its early and they aren’t pitching.
Any thoughts on DeRosa going to the Cardinals in that trade since you did the Innerview with him? I guess that quells any hopes the Yankees could get him in a trade.

I agree. Hey Jeter….captain or not, don’t try to make your manager look like he’s making the wrong decision. I know you’re a gamer, but that comment was uncalled for. Man up….sit on the bench and sthu. Besides….the team seems to be playing pretty well without you, in case you haven’t noticed.
Good to see the younger guys contribute. Looking more and more like Cervelli is the heir apparent to the catching duties. I think if the Yanks unload Matsui and Damon in the off season (although I wish there were a place for Damon to stay) then that will free up the DH role for Jorge to use more as Cervelli breaks in.
It’s obvious that Girardi has got a few young gamers on this team, and I know he is struggling to get them playing time. If they weren’t producing, it wouldn’t be an issue…but they are. And just maybe that is one of the reasons Jeter snapped off such a nasty little answer that was very demeaning to his manager.
CC and AJ had back to back GREAT games, and they justified the $$ spent on them this past off season. It would be GREAT to see them go the whole season in that kind of form.

when has jeter ever said he couldn’t play when he has been banged up or sick and not on the disabled list? if he had said he wasn’t available i would be more concerned. everyone should well remember that jeter was notorious for harassing joe torre when he sat him for one ailment or another and he considers torre a second father. he gave the same answers then as he did with girardi, “i’m fine. it was the manager’s decision.” how many times have we heard that through his career? it’s jeter’s play hard every day mentality and make no excuses attitude that have endeared him to legions of fans and set an excellent example for todays impressionable youth. that was the mentality and approach taken by great yankees throughout history, and especially in the 90’s championship teams. it’s why people like o’neill, mattingly, murcer, mantle, maris, and gehrig will forever live in yankees lore as true gamers because they were always on the field no matter how hurt or sick or emotionally distraught they were. leave jeter alone and enjoy that the team has been productive and won while he gets over his “cough”, lol.
If any of the players are sick, they should stay out of the line-up and preferably, away from th other players.
The last thing we need is for more of the players to get sick. Hopefully, they will get well.
It was so wonderful seeing Mariano get his 500th tonight–and also his first RBI!! 🙂 The only thing that was missing from 500 was you doing a post game interview with him, Kim. That and the guys calling the game. I can’t stand ESPN’s announcers. I’ve grown so accustomed to our guys in the booth, I almost want to mute my TV when I have to listen to anyone besides Kay, Coney, O’Neill, Singy, Leiter, or Flaherty. (why do I feel like someone’s missing from that list? too late at night to think 100% LOL). Congrats to Mo on 500, looking forward to the series vs. Seattle.
Hey Kim, I have the FAN on now — it’s great hearing you with Adam the Bull — you guys are much better than Boomer and Carton (my God — does Carton have an off switch?) — you really have a nice chemistry going on. ~~

And not having the game on YES last night was a big minus (ESPN games are such a waste — I mute the TV and listen to John and Suzyn, and do the same with the games that are broadcast on Fox), with those two milestones for Mo — that would have been a great postgame — but I’m sure you’ll correct that with an interview on the pregame this week.

hey Iheartnyy242…I don’t care who Jeter is. He’s a palyer on a TEAM right now, and he has no business showing up his manager. That isn’t a team player, and he never showed Tore up that way. He shouldn’t do it to Girardi. He should just say…’Well, I’d like to play, but Joe thinks I need another day.’ End of story. Not ‘THAT’S ON HIM, NOT ME.’ That’s a BS attitude and not how a TEAM player handles himself. I’m disappointed in Jeter for that crap. I thought him to be above that kind of crap.

OPEN YOUR EYES, THESE RUMORS ABOUT THE PLAYERS NOT RESPECTING THE MANAGER AND NOT GETTING ALONG WITH HIM ARE STARTING TO COME OUT IN COMMENTS FROM THE PLAYERS SLOWLY BUT SURELY. JUST BECAUSE THEY WON A COUPLE OF GAMES ISN’T GOING TO MAKE IT GO AWAY. THE “MANAGER” MAKES SOME BAD DECISIONS AND I THINK HE HAS NAPOLEAN COMPLEX AKA LITTLEMAN SYNDROME.
