We brave the rain with Jack Nicholson
John Sterling just walked into the YES booth, looked at the gray skies and said, “It rains every day here.”
Then he left. Really, there wasn’t much more to say.
Reminder: Our last chat before the All-Star break is 12:45 p.m. Monday, the last day of a four-game series with the Blue Jays. We’ll answer questions as long as they’re not overly repetitive.
The Weather Girls: “It’s Raining Men” is playing over the P.A. It’s also on our iPod. Gametime is now 7:40.
Polly Tompkins: Remember her? She was the Yankees’ Honorary Bat Girl on May 20, in a partnership with Susan G. Komen for Cure that recognized baseball fans battling cancer. She’s here again today, got big hugs from Alex and Swisher and sat down for an interview with us. The feature will be a good one and will air sometime after the All-Star break. We’ll let you know.
Jorge Posada: He took a foul tip off his left thumb last night and it’s sore, so Cervelli is catching CC. Girardi hopes Posada is ok to catch Burnett in tomorrow’s day game.Jack Nicholson: After our pregame spot, we walked back through the tunnel on our way to the press box. And there’s Jack Nicholson, just hanging out, talking to one of the suite chefs. Now he’s in a slightly more prominent spot – a seat behind home plate. And he’s playing to the scoreboard camera.
Michael Kay: He’s not happy with some of your comments about him. (He’s a very dedicated reader of this blog.) Can’t we all get along and be nice and be the one blog in the world where people aren’t unnecessarily nasty to each other? Please?
Ken Griffey Jr.: It’s hard not to root for him, isn’t it? And, by the way, he always seems to be smiling.
Come on Kim, Kay can’t be THAT unhappy about some comments. I hear him RIP Girardi on his radio show and Girardi doesn’t hold a grudge about those comments. So look over at Michael at the next break and tell him that it’s better to be talked about than to be TOTALLY IGNORED. lol I’m glad I got to watch Jr play over the years but I will always remember him stating loud and clear that he would never play for the Yankees because they were mean to him.
tthen maybe michael kay shouldnt make his fellow big heads feel so bad about it … i wear a 7 5/8 size hat too … he shouldnt sound so ashamed of that size , we arent frankenstein dammit.
Glad to hear Polly was back at the stadium. She has such an energy about her. I’m looking forward to the interview.
Kim – Kay’s wiki page previously stated he lived in NJ with his girlfriend Kim Jones. That part has now been removed. I believe that’s where the dating confusion started. If Michael wants only good blog things said about him here – I have some advice – take away Paul O’Neill’s internet privileges. π
WHAT?!! Michael has NEVER seen One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest?? The performances of Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher are why it is one of AFI’s Greatest Movie’s ever. Even if it means giving up reading your blog, he HAS to see this movie!
[quote]”we arent frankenstein dammit.” Now, that’s funny!! π
Michael Kay is the best!!!!!! How could you not love him!!! π
Hi Kim ,
Why does yes always cut you out of the picture on the post game interview? yes I’m complaining, why is this? You have a special combination of looks and quality that is missing on yes. I would like to see more of you and Nancy Newman,
you both do a great job for Yes!
Thanks, John
I LOVE MICHAEL KAY!
I was just watching a weplay derek jeter video with him in it.
He’s really funny.
My daddy wants to meet him.
Hi Kim,
Tell Michael Kay that you and him are my favorites so don’t listen to those negative comments. They can blog on another site. I look forward to an new entry every day to see what you have to say about him and what he is up to in the booth!! I am loving you in the Fan this week, Miss hearing you and Carlin at 5:00 in the morning. Are you taking over for Mike while he is on vacation?
Let me first say Kay’s a good dude, back in 98 a friend got me an espn pass that let me go anywhere in the Stadium and after the game in the players parking lot Kay totally gave me the “smiling hey what’s up welcome to the are head nod”. The only other person all night who did that was Bernie on the field during bp. I was also uncomfortably stared at by Suzyn Waldman in some press room and in that office that’s right off the elevator, by George Steinbrenner who stopped talking to the women in the office bore a hole through me for a few minutes and then went back to talking to the secretary (I was their to fax something)
Anyway with Kay we were hoping to play him down so you would feel guilty and the next thing you know kids. Waldman and I worked it all out on Twitter so if you’re mad at anyone blame her.
THE SHINING! i was stunned that the trio in the booth didn’t think of this nicholson classic. π
after re-reading some of the comments from recent posts, i realized mine may have been one that offended mr. kay and for that i offer my apologies. i am truly a huge fan of kay and have always enjoyed his knowledge of the game during broadcasts…even started listening to his radio show from his website. love the little rivalry he has with paul o’neill…the two of them bantering back and forth always makes me laugh. he should also know that my 11 year old son knows no other “voice of the yankees,” so his mimic of a homerun call is always “see ya!” just like kay does. anyway, my apologies again if i was an offender. π
anyone who complains about the yes crew needs to go listen to the other broadcasts for a while. it will give you a whole new respect for the great team yankees fans have covering the team on the field.
Hey Kim! You’re doing a great job with the blog! I love hearing about all the behind-the-scenes stuff. Anyway, I read that those fake umpire fans from Toronto are going to be sitting behind the plate for the Yankee series this weekend. Any chance you’re gonna do an “Innerview” with them?
I don’t know why you and Kay are making such a big deal out of one or two comments. So far as what I’ve seen, there haven’t been any arguments, fights, personal insults, etc. But in no way is every person on this planet or every Yankee fan going to like Michael Kay. Or you. Or anybody. That’s just life. You can be the nicest person on the planet and still not everyone is going to like you. Some people like him. Some people don’t. Personally, as a person I like him. As an announcer I happen to think he could do a better job. As do other people as well. Now, YES is by NO means the best broadcasting crew. And by no means the worst. According to some other fans who live out of the area, Toronto, LA Angels, and White Sox have some really bad announcers. Like, REALLY bad. And, unfortunately, I happen to think the Mets have a better crew. But that’s just my personal opinion based on what I like to hear during a game.
To wrap this up, let me just ask you, maybe before the all-star break you can put up a post on what teams in each league will win their divisions, wild card, and what players might win the Cy Young, batting title, etc. Then see how many you get right at the end of the year.
Hi Kim,
My husband and I can attest to the fact that Michael is a great guy. We go to Tampa every year for Spring Training and one year I saw Michael standing talking on the phone and when he finished I went over to him to get his autograph and then we took a picture with him. He chatted with us for a while and then went inside. He is funny and a gentlemen (and he is TALL in person). So Michael don’t feel bad about the comments, those of us who know think you are great! Hope to see you next year at Spring Training.
Everyone have a Great 4th!!!
Hi Kim and the rest of the YES Crew,
Just wanted to say thank you again to all of you for another magical day at the Stadium yesterday! You have done so much for Polly and all of us who now call her “Queen of the Yankees”. Obviously I am biased, but I have never been more proud to be a Yankee fan. I didn’t think I could love the whole organization more, but I do! Keep up the good work, YES! Kim, you rock!
Everyone else… this feature will be fantastic… watch for it!!!
Have a happy and safe 4th of July. GO YANKEES!!!
Awww Kimmie!! Your pleas on behalf of Michael Kay have touched me. Listen…tell Michael it’s all in fun. If he sends me $50 I’ll quit calling him names (really though Kimmie, I do it in jest…I actually like Michael Kay)
Now truthfully….it’s the talk about his eating in the booth that does it for me. All the Pizza…the burgers…the ice cream…the pizza…the pizza….well, you get my drift.
I mentioned his giant head on anther entry on your blog…but that was BEFORE I read your plea to stop picking on him. I’m going to hate to stop truthfully…I was having some fun. But I wouldn’t want the lad to get a complex or anything….maybe have to see a head shrinker….oh wait….maybe that would be a goo…..OK…I just stopped myself.
OK….I can do this….I can be strong!! I can stop picking on Pizza the hutt, er, uh……..I mean…..Michael Kay!! At least I think I can.
PS…tell the young lad that I think he does a wonderful job in the booth.
mbrandes…you had me laughing so hard, tears were rolling down my cheeks. thanks for the laugh! i needed that! π
Well…..I think Michael Kay is fantastic. I listen to his radio show and I don’t miss any games. The only thing that drives me nutz is when The Yanks play on ESPN and YES doesn’t do the game. I would also like to say that Michael, Paul, Mr. Cone Kenny, Flash are GREAT. I do get a laugh out of their conversations and Michael’s Vocab and how much info he holds is awesome. Kim you do a great job as well but I needed to let Mr. Kay know how great he and his team are. I would like to thanks all of you who work on the games. Give yourself a hand. If I failed to mention anyone then I am sorry. Thanks for all the fun.
Hi Kim!
As always you are doing a great job with interviews & blog.
Mikey Kay should lightenup. He is a broadcaster and as
such questions players and managers. The personal
stuff is not neccessary (is that spelled right?) and just
foregetaboutit. One ? you might ask Girardi – Split Wang
and Joba up? Both can’t make it past 5 and it would help
the bullpen.
Kim,
I love Michael Kay. The times that he is not in the booth, I think it is very boring and makes for a long game. He brings so much life to it and makes me laugh. Without him, the others are just blah. That’s not to say I don’t like them. I think all of them are so much better than the ESPN announcers. They are horrible. i enjoy all of the YES announcers, Ken, David, Al, Paul and especially Michael. Not especially John but I will still watch it.
I really enjoy your interviews especially when they include Arod. He is my all time favorite.
Thanks for listening.
Good thing Flaherty isn’t reading the blog.
Kim,
Michael Kay is terrific. Yankee games done by other announcers are just baseball games. Yankee games done by Michael Kay are fun. I try not to miss any of his broadcasts.
I agree with bif42onthego. I love Michael Kay.
there is NOTHING better than a game called by the Paul O’Neil and Michael Kay duo. Convince Paul to do more games! No body else would entertaining enough to start talking about Frito Bandito erasers after making some crack about young-Micheal’s “mini-afro”
I want to share something with Kim and Kay Hmmm the kim and kay show sounds sweet, On a serious note I would like to thank you both for being who you are I am a hard working Yankee fan who would love to be at more games than I can afford these days but my pure enjoyment is listen to you both, I try to hear as much of the Michael Kay show on my way home to long island while I’m stuck in traffic on the southern state parkway. I get home and get myself together and listen to you both on the pre game show and I watch and hear MK announce the game with the crew which I enjoy very much. The amount of knowledge you both have and the human side of either your honest input or a negative feed back about a player or manager has given me to the motivation to become more baseball smart so I can keep up with your conversation where as in before I would just watch the game because I like baseball and love my Yankees so now I look for the things you both bring out in your spots on the radio and TV any way I just want to thank you for being who you both are and for making my baseball viewing my enjoyable.
Thank You Kand K from Bill from Long Island
Kim you and Kay are the most inspiring people i have ever known in the sports world kim thanks for coming out on that grass grass for every game i probley would not watch the post game if it werent for you and i would love to meet you some day
